Wyatt Dean Pettigrew

Wyatt Dean Pettigrew, 92, passed away January 4, 2021 at Sugar Creek Senior Living Center in Brownsville, Tennessee. Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Pettigrew will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Oakwood Cemetery in Brownsville, TN with Rev. Sammy Tillman and Dr. Roger Penn officiating. Dean was born October 15, 1928 to Ezra Dean Pettigrew and Stella Blanche Threadgill Pettigrew of Bemis, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Mary Ann Graves Pettigrew. Survivors include three sons, Gary (Sharon), Jack (Glenda), and Woody (Judy), along with eight grandchildren, Shannon Roberts (Will), Rob Pettigrew (Melissa), Scott Pettigrew, (Katherine), Mary-Wyatt Pettigrew, Jackson Pettigrew, Everette Pettigrew, Talton Pettigrew (Sarah), and Lester Dean Pettigrew, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Pettigrew Weaver, a nephew, Greg Weaver, and one grandson, Trae Keller. Dean attended Lambuth College in Jackson, Tennessee where he met his wife, Ann, and he also attended the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in Memphis, Tennessee. He and his family moved to Brownsville in 1952 and have been an active part of the community ever since. Dean purchased and managed Quality Drug Store until his retirement 44 years later. He was appointed to the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy in 1966 and served as President in 1971. He was a Mason, Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He served on the Board of Directors of InSouth Bank and was a city alderman for 16 years. In his younger days, he loved fishing and hunting. His favorite pastime transitioned to golf as he grew older. He was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. Pallbearers for the service are Rob Pettigrew, Scott Pettigrew, Talton Pettigrew, Lester Dean Pettigrew, Jackson Pettigrew, and Everette Pettigrew. Honorary pallbearers are Carlton Sedberry, James Talton Graves, Jr., Alan Sanders, Will Roberts, Chester Dixon, Patrick Mann, Al McRae, Robert Haynes, Danny Murley, Robert Pettigrew Jett, and the Methodist Men’s coffee group. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 117 E. Franklin, Brownsville, TN 38012, or the charity of donor’s choice. All arrangements and services are under the direction of Lea and Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.
