Robert's Obituary
Mr. Robert Thomas Tonge age 94 of Hornsby, passed quietly in the arms of an angel Friday, November 3, 2017. He was one of the last of what we rightly call the, “Greatest Generation”. Born in Joliet, Illinois to his parents, Robert Howard Tonge and Gertrude Ward Tonge, October 9, 1923, Mr. Tonge enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a 17 year old boy. In World War II, he served valiantly in the skies over Nazi Germany and surviving one of their harshest POW camps.
Mr. Tonge returned home, married the love of his life and settled in Madison, Wisconsin where he took up the sheet metal trade and raised his family. He spent his last days at home in Hornsby, Tennessee surrounded by love and prayers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Tonge and grandson, Nick Vorwerk.
Survivors include his wife of seventy years, Grace Reeves Tonge; sons, Robert Tonge and Randall Tonge (Cathy); daughter, Linda Cox (Johnny); brother, Ralph Tonge. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Richard Vorwerk, Robert Tonge, Jennifer Tonge and Nan Tonge as well as three great grandsons.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Tonge will be conducted, Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Bethel Springs.
