Minnie McRae Powell Cutliff Miller, age 96, wife of William Roots Miller, III of Brownsville, TN died May 10, 2012 at her home. Visitation will be Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 PM in the Lea and Simmons Funeral Home with Dr. H.K. Sorrell officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Brownsville, TN. Mrs. Miller was born September 28, 1915, in Haywood County, TN, the daughter of the late T.W. and Mary Rivers Powell. She received her undergraduate degree from Memphis State (now University of Memphis) in Memphis, TN, and her graduate degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. Mrs. Miller taught in Haywood County schools and Jonesboro, AR then served as Supervisor of Instruction in Haywood County Schools for 13 years. She did post-graduate work at the University of Vienna, Austria, the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado. She joined the faculty at the University of Memphis in 1958 and retired from there in 1980. During this time, she was director of Aerospace Education Workshops for teachers. An active member of the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and participating in the United Methodist Women's organization and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. During retirement she served as the lead trainer for Literacy Volunteers in Haywood County, taught Literacy students and with her husband, delivered "Meals on Wheels" for 20 years. Mrs. Miller was also active in the G.F.W. C. First Review Club and the Retired Teachers Association. She is preceded in death by her brother: Thomas W. Powell, Jr.
