Mary's Obituary Mrs. Mary Scott “Scottie” Hassell Freeman age 94 of Bells, Tennessee passed away at her home on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. She was born on September 6, 1923 to the late Alvin D and Mary Nell Scott Hassell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard E. Freeman; son-in-law, David L. Martindale; great-grandson, Eli Freeman Tritt; a sister, Doris Morton and a brother, Alvin Hassell, Jr. Scottie is survived by her three daughters, Lyn Fields (John) of Tiptonville, Sherry Kail (Jere) of Bells and Casey Young (Winton) of Celina; grandchildren, Jeff Martindale (Lana), Rich Martindale (Heidi), Jenny Hopper (Joey), Mack Kail (Kelli), Shiloh Leake (George), Dylan Young (Amanda), Harrison Young, Mailee Peterson (Matt), Jackson Fields, David Fields (Sydney) and eighteen great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the loving care given to her by her care-givers Valarie Smith, Charlotte Allen and Faye Cathey. Scottie graduated from Humboldt High School and attended Cumberland University where she met Richard. They married on Valentine’s Day 1942 and were married for 66 years at the time of his death. During their world wide travels they visited 5 continents. She was very involved in the community. She served as District President of the American Legion Auxillary, a Girl Scout leader, active in PTA and served in multiple aspects of Bells First United Methodist Church. Her interests were many and she was an accomplished musician who played piano for community events. She taught a quilting class at the Jackson State Community College and published a book of quilt patterns. Her gifted computer skills kept her in touch with her many friends and enriched her endless love of learning. She loved to cook and was famous for her tea cakes made from the recipe that has been passed down for many generations. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Jeff Martindale, Rich Martindale, Joey Hopper, Mack Kail, George Leake, Dylan Young and Harrison Young. Funeral services for Mrs. Scottie Freeman will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Bells Funeral Home with Rev. Susie Riley officiating. Interment will follow in Belleview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 12:00 pm until the service hour. Memorials may be made to Bells First United Methodist Church or to Save the Bells Theater at Renasant Bank or Bank of Crockett.
