M. Lowery Kirk, age 80, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018 in the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivy and Marvin Kirk, three sisters, Mary Frazier, Billie Kennedy and Joan Holden. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Vivian, Brownsville, TN, his son, Phillip (Penny), Arlington, TN, grandson, Taylor Burchum, two sisters, Freddie Brown and Marlene Sartain, both of Little Rock, AR, plus a host of nephews and nieces.
Lowery was a star basketball player at Middleton High School and received a basketball scholarship to Memphis State University, playing as a freshman in the 1956 NIT finals. After college, Lowery played professional basketball with the Hawaiian Chiefs. He was inducted into the Memphis State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. Ultimately, he retired from Roadway Express where he worked in Sales and Operations Management. He received many awards of excellence for his outstanding work. Lowery leaves a host of friends. He loved people, a good golf game and a good joke. He never met a stranger. Everyone enjoyed his larger than life personality. Lives will never be the same without “big man” as his friends were known to call him and for his family who called him husband and dad.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 20, 2018 in the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from10:30 – 12:00 Noon prior to the service. A private burial will be held Thursday morning in Memphis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
