Jerry Whorton Lewis

Jerry Whorton Lewis, age 87, of Whiteville, TN, passed away at his residence on Saturday, December 21, 2024. Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Mt. Pleasant Community Church with Bro. Mike Hopper officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM. 

Jerry was born September 16, 1937, in Haywood County. He was the middle child of Jesse Lacurgus “Daddy Dude” Lewis and Mary Louise Whorton “Mama Ease” Lewis. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he held many job titles before he retired, he was a farmer, worked for Coca-Cola Co., Wells Lamont Glove Factory, and the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge. He and Peggy owned and operated Lewis Trophy and Saddle for many years. Jerry was a member of Mt. Pleasant Community Church his entire life where he served as song leader and music director for many years. He found great joy in being active in his church and put his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ above everything. Jerry loved his family and his church with all his heart. His favorite pastime was coon hunting until his health made him give it up. He would coon hunt with anyone that would go with him. His dedication to encouraging young men to coon hunt and staying out of trouble will long be remembered. He was a great asset to the community, always helping anyone in need and was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Jerry leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of sixty-eight years, Peggy Stuart Lewis, three sons, Gerald Lewis (Valerie), Timmy Lewis (Lisa), Robbie Lewis; two daughters, Jackie Lewis, Jeannie McBride; one sister, Hope Cannon; twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Lewis, as well as his parents.

Pallbearers for the service are Jerry Morris, Kirk Morris, Thomas Carlton, Hunter Mulherin, Brock Smith, Jordan Sams, Jonathan Grainger and Marshall Jones. Honorary Pallbearers are Bubba McBride, Troy Phillips, Dagen Hudson and Garrett Pipkin.

The family has requested memorials be made to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Trust, c/o Danny Watson, 1234 Hillville Loop, Whiteville, TN 38075. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.
