James Thornton Hughes

Mr. James Thornton Hughes, age 89 passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017 in the Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, TN. Graveside Services will be conducted Friday, November 10, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Brownsville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be held Friday, November 10, 2017 from 11:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. in the Lea and Simmons Funeral Home. Mr. James was a lifelong farmer, cotton ginner, and friend to so many in the agricultural community.   Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Thomas Hughes, his parents, Lewis Franklin Hughes and Ruby Christmas Hughes, one brother: Alfred Harris “Hallie” Hughes and one sister, Billie Jean Hughes Nonemaker. He is survived by his son, James Thomas “Tommy” Hughes, his daughter, Martha Jean Hughes Gay (Michael), both of Brownsville, TN, one brother, Robert Lewis Hughes, Brownsville, TN, two sisters, Dorothy Hughes Taylor, Memphis, TN, and Mary Louise Gillespie, Brownsville, TN, four grandchildren, Kelly Hughes Handy, Jamie Hughes, Kimberly Gay Raines, Elizabeth Gay Nordtvedt, seven great grandchildren, Brad Booth, Taylor Booth, Hughes Simmons, Chris Raines, Lauren Raines, Mason Nordtvedt and Harper Nordtvedt and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lymphoma Society, 404 BNA Drive, Suite 102, Nashville, TN 37217 or the Charity of the Donor’s Choice.
