Dr. H.K.'s Obituary
Dr. H. K. Sorrell age 90 of Brownsville, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 in Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville.
He was born in Memphis, September 5, 1926 to the late Herman Aaron Sorrell and Grace Payne Sorrell. Dr. Sorrell served our Lord as a Minister of the Gospel for over seventy years. He graduated from Union University in 1949. In that same year, he helped establish Cloverport Baptist Church in Madison County, TN. Dr. Sorrell furthered his ministry by attending the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, graduating in 1952. He then pastored Unity Baptist Church in Bean Blossom, IN, Salem Baptist Church in Lynn Grove, KY, First Baptist Church in Sturgis, KY, the majority of his ministry (thirty years) at Brownsville Baptist Church, Brownsville, TN. During his retirement years, he pastored First Baptist Church in Whiteville and Salem Baptist Church in Henning. In 1976, he received his honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Union University. Dr. Sorrell not only served our Lord but our country as well serving in the United States Navy in World War, II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Howle, Mildred Moreland and Mary Elizabeth West.
Dr. Sorrell is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Jean Hicks Sorrell who served with him Ministering the Gospel; four sons, Bill Sorrell of Whiteville, Mark Sorrell of Southaven, Stephen Sorrell of Brownsville and Paul Sorrell of Jackson. Other survivors include a granddaughter, Lauren Maslowski and husband Brett of Arlington as well as two great grandchildren, Bram and Bryley Maslowski.
Serving as pallbearers are Jerry Chipman, Fred Simpson, Owen Hopkins, Robbie Tidwell, Jimmy Apperson and Richard Miller. Honorary pallbearers are the Pastors and Deacons from the churches in the West Tennessee area where Dr. Sorrell served.
Funeral services for Dr. H.K. Sorrell will be conducted Friday, May 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Brownsville Baptist Church with Bro. Ira Singleton and Bro. L.D. Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in Brownsville Memorial Gardens. The Sorrell family will receive friends on Thursday at the church from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Any memorials may be made to the church of the donor’s choice, in memory of Dr. Sorrell.
