Elsie's Obituary
Mrs. Elsie Marie Spellings Pettey died at her home April 4, 2018, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Miller M. Pettey.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda P. Davis and Sylvia Stephenson and husband Barry all of Bells. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Christina McCage and husband Robert, Kimberly Briscoe and husband Jeff, Jennifer Penalo and husband Adrian, Heather Crook and husband Tripp, and Lindsay Griffin and husband Alan. Her great grandchildren include Ashton McCage, Nathan Briscoe, Julian Penalo, Winn Crook, Haylan Crook and Charles Harber Crook. She is also survived by three sisters, Lenora Stephenson of Union City, Barbara Williams of Savannah and Harriet Wilson of Gleason as well as her faithful canine companion, Sweetie Pie.
Mrs. Pettey was born and raised in Bells by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Spellings. She and her three sisters enjoyed growing up in town and made life-long friendships with an active neighborhood of fun-loving boys and girls.
She also enjoyed cooking and caring for her family and helped Miller entertain hundreds of guests throughout the years at their weekend home on the Tennessee River. The annual trip to the river by the Sunday School class always resulted in many tall tales and shenanigans and much fish enjoyed with all of the trimmings.
Church was always important to her and she was usually in church somewhere across the years each Sunday. In her later years, she returned to her home church and her Methodist faith.
Mrs. Pettey was a proud member of “The Sewing Club” and was an accomplished seamstress who kept her daughters clothed in her finest creations all throughout their childhood.
She traveled extensively with her husband and even went around the world with him on the famed “Concorde” in 1989. However, her favorite places were always returning to “Dog Alley” in Bells and on her front porch at the river.
Mrs. Pettey will be missed by countless friends and family as well as her beloved Sweetie Pie.
