Earl Hight

September 29, 1927 — March 1, 2016

Earl Romus Hight, age 88, entered the presence of his Lord on March 1, 2016 at Jackson General Hospital. Visitation will be held at Lea and Simmons on March 3 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on March 4 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Jerry Drace and Rev. Ron Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Brownsville Memorial Gardens. Lea and Simmons Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements. Romus was born on September 29, 1927, and raised in the Wellwood community. He graduated from Haywood High School in 1945. He retired from Southwest Electric Co-Op after 39 years of service. Romus was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as deacon, music director and taught the boys Sunday school class for over fifty years. His hobbies included fishing, wood working, and traveling which included all fifty states, Europe and the Middle East. Romus is preceded in death by his parents, Burr and Mai Hight; and brother Ray. His surviving brother, Russell and wife Nancy reside in Jackson. Romus was truly a wonderful and caring husband to his surviving wife, Lucille (Steele) Hight. Their seventy years of marriage is a testimony to the faithfulness and devotions they had for each other. He was a kind and loving father to his two daughters. His oldest daughter, Becky Drace and husband, Jerry, reside in Jackson. His youngest daughter, Judy Carlton and husband, John, reside in Brownsville. He was the grandfather to Drew and Becca Drace, and Thomas and Jessica Carlton. He had seven great grandchildren: Elora Kate Carlton, Duke Warren, Noah, Isa, Nick, Levi and Hannah Drace. Romus' love for his family and his friendships throughout Haywood County leave a legacy which reflects the husband and father of Proverbs 20:7, "The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him." He was faithful to his wife, loving to his children, and a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. He and Lucille would begin each day in prayer and end each day in the Word of God. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Romus encountered his heart warming smile and firm handshake. His presence will be greatly missed on earth and greatly rewarded in heaven.
