Bobby's Obituary
Mr. Bobby Wayne Holcomb age 81 of Memphis, formerly of Nutbush, Passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital- Bartlett.
He was born on October 12, 1936 in Nutbush to the late Archie Holcomb and Fannie Rhodes Holcomb.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Owen Holcomb.
Bob loved gospel music, Southern Gospel that is…four-part male harmony. He spent many hours listening, recording, duplicating his collection, and transferring vinyl albums to CD. Throughout his lifetime he sang in many quartets. The Gospel Voices, The Redeemers, The Gospel Truth Quartet (also known as the MSBC Quartet) to name a few. He loved to boom out those bass lines with great animation and physical presence. A showman, an entertainer, a professional, a snappy dresser (the first things kids wanted to see when they saw him at church was his wild, perfectly matching socks), a true gentleman! A consummate historian of Southern Gospel quartet music as he could tell you all the groups, their changes in personnel and length of each one’s tenure, their albums, their best songs (in his opinion of course), and their legacy. Everyone loved to hear his stories of traveling with quartets week nights and weekends, always ending up back at his home church by Sunday morning.
This past year after a surgical procedure paralyzed his voice, his dream was to sing again, and one could see his enthusiasm building as his voice began to return. He didn’t realize that dream on earth but now he is singing in the heavenly choir and most likely with many of his quartet heroes whose careers he followed so closely. Bob W. Holcomb will be greatly missed, but the “Glad Reunion” one day will make all the difference.
Mr. Holcomb served in the United States Army as Medic with the rank of E-4, he also taught Haywood Elementary. In 1960, he moved to Memphis where he worked as a Manager and Salesman for many companies including John Gerber Co. and Wickes Lumber where he worked in North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. He also worked for Slaughter Bros., Hyman Building Supply, Celotex and many other companies.
Survivors include his son, Robert (Biula) Holcomb of Memphis and his daughter, Karen (Luanel) Gonzalez of Marietta, Ga. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Bismark Ledesma Lugo and Karina Noel Gonzalez.
