Mrs. Athene Carter, age 89 passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 in the Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Graveside Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:30 P.M., Friday, October 12, 2018 in the Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 12, 2018 from 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. in the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home. Known to her family as “Nanny” she loved gardening, tending to her flowers and working in the yard. She was considered at Sugar Creek to be the fastest pea sheller! She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Hackler Cobb and Zina Mae Proctor Cobb, her first husband, James Thomas “Peach” Hall, Sr. and her second husband, Cecil Carter, a son, James Thomas Hall, Jr, three brothers, Joe Hackler Cobb, Jimmy Cobb, Mack Cobb, and one sister, Betty Ann Cassidy. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Hall Whitten (Eli), Brownsville, TN, two brothers, Bobby Cobb and Doug Cobb, both of Jackson, TN, one sister, Marlene Melvold, CA, two grandchildren, Ashley Leath Newman (Rives), Munford, TN, Allyson Leath Byrum (Charles), Brownsville, TN, and four great grandchildren, Nathan Newman, Shelton Newman, Carson Newman, and James Thomas “J.T.” Byrum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908 or the Brownsville/ Haywood County Animal Shelter, c/o Judy Mouser, P.O. Box 449, Brownsville, TN 38012.
